Montufar
The region of Lake Izabal in Guatemala has great mining potential, not just to the north but also south of the lake in the area known as Montúfar in the Municipality of Amates, Izabal. This deposit also discovered 30 years ago, anticipated long-term mining operations.
Unlike FeNix, Montufar may be considered for the shipment of ore to the process plant of Solway in Ukraine or it may be considered in the future for the power plant in El Estor, Izabal. The first option would speed up the operation in the area, since the infrastructure would be limited to a few temporary facilities. The installation of a processing plant on site is not required for this project, due to the proximity of the processing plant in El Estor Izabal in the future.
Since 2004, CGN has a license of Exploration in the Montufar area and to this date it has conducted several studies and drilling campaigns. With the drilling conducted in 2007, CGN was able to corroborate some of the historical data of previous work carried out by INCO.
In October 2011, CGN took the next step in developing the mining project Montufar and requested operating license to the Ministry of Energy and Mines. Together with the application, an Environmental Study and a work plan for the planned activity was prepared.
